CommVault File System Core is a foundational component of the Commvault data protection platform developed by Commvault Systems. It provides the essential services required to back up and restore file system data across supported Windows, Linux, and UNIX environments. The component discovers files and folders, coordinates snapshot-based protection where available (such as Microsoft VSS on Windows), tracks changes for efficient incremental and differential jobs, and builds searchable indexes to enable fast, granular recovery.
Data is securely transferred to Commvault storage through MediaAgents, with global deduplication and compression helping reduce storage and network usage. Administrators manage policies, schedules, and retention centrally, and can perform in-place or out-of-place restores at the file, folder, or volume level. Additional capabilities commonly used with File System Core include client-side encryption, bandwidth throttling, and integration with Commvault’s reporting, alerting, and role-based access controls—supporting reliable protection of file servers, endpoints, and other systems that require file-level backup and recovery.
